Hear our Voices - Treehouse Foundation

Vonetta Smith

Hampshire County

Mary Steele is a woman who puts others before herself at Treehouse, where she is not only a grandmother raising a grandchild, but she is a leader in supporting this multi-generational, women-led community that is re-envisioning foster care. Mama Steele is the heart and soul of the Treehouse Community in Hampshire County, where women and girls come together across differences of age, race, culture, and background to raise their voices and make a difference on behalf of women and children whose lives have been touched by foster care. Mary came to live at the Treehouse Community because her life is about making a difference and Treehouse spoke to her. From taking fun excursions to the Connecticut River to creating beautiful awareness banners for the community center, Mary has kept her community moving in so many ways. Through the support of the Women’s Fund, she is empowered, often referred to as a powerful leader and at the same time, approachable, kind and a sower of peace. The Treehouse Community could not make the progress or learn important lessons on community and social change, without a ripple like Mary Steele.
